BREAST REDUCTION

The growth of female breasts is a normal physiologic change during puberty. However, in some cases the growth can be over proportional. Estrogen sensibility is one of the most common reasons for over proportional breast growth.

Another, but less common reason is the overproduction of hormones. For example the PCO-Syndrome triggers such over production. However, such reasons can be treated. Also, the fibrocystic breast disease is a situation often seen too. In this disease, the mammary glands of the breast, which is developed completely during the puberty and has reached its normal structure, show changes. In this situation which usually doesn’t need any treatment or can be treated with nonsurgical, medical methods can also cause oversize breasts.

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY BREASTS THAT ARE OVER PROPORTIONATE

Especially between the ages 18 to 25, women care a lot about their face value. In these ages, women with big breasts feel uncomfortable about their big breasts and begin to dislike themselves. Due to these emotions, they might avoid social activities like sports or swimming.

With advanced age, the treatment of enlarged breasts becomes more and more a physical necessity, rather than esthetic reasons. The weight of the breast may cause great problems to the skeletal system. Cervical disc hernias, kyphosis, loss of power in the arms due to nerve compressions and headaches are some of such problems and may bring up the possibility of a surgical breast reduction. After the climacteric, it is inevitable that the weight causes more stress on the skeletal system due to an eventual osteoporosis.

The problem of having big breasts has to be assessed far beyond pure esthetic considerations. Women having decided for a breast reduction usually report having difficulties in their back.

It has been also shown that the problem causes major depression in some women over 40. This is added to the possible health problems due to big breasts like skin chaffing. Women not being understood by the society and not getting the necessary support from other people including the partner, can suffer from depression.

Young women wanting a breast reduction, not experiencing problems like osteoporosis yet, have esthetical considerations rather than problems with their skeletal system.

BEFORE AND AFTER THE SURGICAL INTERVENTION

Before the breast reduction, the suitable technique providing sufficient blood circulation, not avoiding milk production, maintaining all functions and avoiding the loss of sensibility of the nipples will be chosen by performing some standard tests. The bigger the breasts are and the more they hang and the more difficult the surgical intervention is. Especially with increasing age, the loss of some functions become unavoidable.

After the surgery, the patient usually stays 1 to 2 days in the clinic.

Being discharged from the hospital, the patient can return to her normal life and can bath, etc.

She can begin to work after 10 days.

The patient shall wear a special firming bra for 6 to 8 weeks.

For 6 to 8 weeks hard labor and sports shall be avoided.

Underwired bras should be avoided for 6 months.

AT WHICH AGE CAN A BREAST REDUCTION BE PERFORMED?

Before performing a breast reduction at young ages, first of all it has to be assessed whether there is an indication for such a surgical intervention. In some cases, even if the young person feels uncomfortable about the breast size, from a medical point of view a surgical intervention might be obsolete. Only if the problem has adverse effects on the social life of the patient or it causes some psychological problems, a breast reduction may be considered.

Before the decision to perform a breast reduction, the doctor has to be certain that the growth of the breast has stopped completely.

DO ANY SCARS REMAIN AFTER THE BREAST REDUCTION?

A small vertical scar under the nipple will remain after the breast reduction. With a new intervention performed about 6 months later, the visibility of the scar can be further reduced. However it is important to note that, the minor visibility of the scar is not necessarily associated with the success of the surgical intervention. The surgeon will, if necessary use additional incisions and sutures to provide maximal functionality of the breast and to protect the health of the patient.

BREAST ENLARGEMENT

Breast enlargement operations last for about 1.5 hours. The operation takes place under general anesthesia. The patient is discharged from the clinic the same day or the next day. However, you should wait for a few days before returning to work. For 3 weeks you shouldn’t lift heavy objects and the arms should not be elevated, like when reaching for a high object.

MASTOPEXY

Due to age, nursing and gravity, the elasticity of the breast skin is reduced and the breast can hang. Mastopexy is a surgical intervention to solve such problems. The aim of the operation is to give a new form and structure to the breast skin, which has lost its elasticity due to giving birth and nursing. If the Aureolasare is too big, they can be reduced during this intervention. Combined with a prosthesis implantation, the breast can also be enlarged while giving a youthful look. There are many different techniques which are applied for a Mastopexy. The surgeon decides which technique is the most appropriate, assessing the grade of hanging, the size of the breasts and the situation of the skin.

AFTER THE INTERVENTION

Mastopexy surgery takes place under general anesthesia and the intervention usually lasts for about 3 hours. The patient is discharged from the clinic the same day or the next day. The sutures are removed after 10-12 days.

If a breast prosthesis has been implanted under the muscle during the intervention, you may experience some pain when moving your arms for a few days. In this case, you will need potent analgesics and muscle relaxing drugs. Patients can easily return to their daily activities using an elastic bra, also called a sports bra, after a few days.
